A elaborate ice-carving fruit birthday cake was put in the middle of the ground. Panpan circled around the special cake just like that he made a beautiful wish. Then, he sat down and began to enjoy the cake and the special moment of himself without any scruple. There broke out cheers now and then off the field. This scene took place in China Giant Panda Research Center- Panpan garden of Dujiangyan base. On September 21st, the panda fans all around the world and the staffs in the base prepared a warm birthday party for Panpan.
In the middle of the activity, Weirongping, the deputy director of the Research Center, shared Panpan’s story with all the guests. This year, Panpan is thirty years old with five generations. He is the oldest male giant panda in the world who is alive. It equals to one hundred years old for human beings. Panpan was born in 1985 in the wild field of Baoxing, Ya’an. People saved him when he was several months old and then bought him up. At the same time, Panpan was called “hero father”. For that he made a difference for the development of the early captive giant pandas. According to the statistics, the number of Panpan’s offspring who are still alive is 130. It accounts for around one quarter of all captive giant pandas in the whole world. It shows Panpan’s strong fecundity. Tuantuan and Yuanzai who live in Taiwan Zoo are the offspring of Panpan. He has lots of children and grandchildren. With the solving of the problem of breeding and increasing of the number of captive pandas, the Chinese authorities in the field of protecting pandas pay more attention to the management of the diversity and advocate the strategy of eugenics recently. The record is hard to break. In the activity, fans shared their stories between them and the giant pandas with everyone and expressed the luck of attending the birthday party. And also, they shared the enjoyment with the staffs, the guests and the visitors.
Panpan will spend his rest of his life in the Dujiangyan base. Generally, the giant panda could make it to aged 20s under the artificial feeding. With the advance of protecting giant pandas, there are more and more captive giant panda will live longer and longer. The Research Center always keep an eye on the welfare of the senile giant pandas and try their best to provide a good living condition for the senile pandas. This is one of the important functions for the Dujiangyan base. Therefore, the Research Center named “Panpan Garden”for the first open area in Dujiangyan base. It not only commemorate the hero panda for his contribution, but also represent the caring for the senile giant pandas.
